Michael John Dolman Cassidy was a consultant nephrologist who practised in Cape Town, South Africa. He was born in Woburn, Bedfordshire, the son of a mining engineer, Frank Allen Cassidy and his wife Irene Edith, who was a milliner. He was educated at Bedford School and studied medicine at London University and St Bartholomew’s Hospital. When he qualified in 1974 he became house physician to W E Gibb [Munk’s Roll, Vol.IX, p.194] and W R Cattell at Bart’s. Following this he was a consultant in nephrology to Hammersmith Hospital.

Moving to South Africa in 1984, he was appointed consultant physician to the department of medicine Groote Schuur Hospital and honorary senior lecturer to the University of Cape Town. He was president of the Cape Kidney Association from 1994 onwards and a member of the European Dialysis and Transplant Association.

Publishing various papers on renal disease, he also contributed a chapter to the Oxford textbook of clinical nephrology (ed. S. Cameron, Oxford Medical Publications, 1992) and edited Proceedings of the advanced course in medicine (1989). He enjoyed walking, fly fishing and gardening.

He married Geraldine Lesley née Clarke, a nursing sister, in 1984 and they had a son.
